Was in a minor accident with a Progressive insured unlicensed driver. He took no information and left the scene of the accident before police arrived.

Progressive agent accessed the damage and assured me it would be covered. I was ignored from that point on and when I called, I was told they could not reach their client and thus could not pay the claim. On a second call, I was told the driver was in jail and I would have to wait till he got out, no matter how long it took. Each call the agent became more belligerent and refused to return calls.

This is the M.O.

of this company, while they rake in billions in profits and a license to steal given them by our politicians in Albany. The time is long past due to stop all the auto fraud.

Monetary Loss: $523.

Location: Syosset, New York

Question? Why were you calling your insurance agent?

Insurance agents for Progressive are not licensed as Claims Handlers. They cannot and should not be handling your claim inquiries. Once a claim has been opened by Progressive, all inquiries should be directed to the Claims Handler assigned to your claim. Any attempt by an Insurance Agent to handle your claim should be reported to Progressive Claims Office at once.

Likewise, the politicians in Albany should have little to no control over the NY State Licensing Board.

The licensing of insurance companies to do business in NY is another matter & complaints can be filed with the Department of Financial Services /Insurance Department /Consumer Assistance Unit. Better luck with your next insurance company.

Same experience in Utah. Hit by an at fault Progressive customer, put in a claim and checked with Progressive every week to see if they contacted their client.

Most insurance companies process a claim after 10-days.

After 30-days, Progressive said my options were to sue in small claims court or go through my insurance, pay my deductible ($500), and let my insurance company fight them. Great mission statement!

They were correct in advising you of your options. It's unfortunate that not all claims run smoothly and in a manner that agreeable to both parties of a claim.

However, what does happen when a Progressive insured fails to respond to a reported insurance claim, the company not only pursues them in court, but also cancels their policy for breech of contract. Given your choices, I would have still opted for Progressive to handle the claim because the $500 deductible would go much farther than going to court. With your $500 - Progressive has to repair your car despite the other drives non-compliance, they also, go to court anyways with, or without your involvement whereby they seek compensation for the cost of the claim, attorney's fees, State Police are notified of the insured's failure to respond to an accident investigation as a criminal matter which can result in getting the driving privileges suspended.

There are so many things that happen to the driver who has caused delay & disruption to your life that goes unnoticed by you as their insured since it does not by law require your involvement. Additionally, I would recommend that you always opt for a rental car which puts financial pressure on the company to get you back into your car.
